WhatsApp AI Agents for Business in 2026: What Meta Business Agent Does, What It Costs and How to Set It Up Well

In Colombia, the sale often happens on WhatsApp. A customer sees your ad or your Instagram, taps the green button and writes “Hola, ¿precio?”. If nobody answers in a few minutes, or the answer arrives the next morning, that customer has already written to three other businesses.

That is why one of the biggest changes of 2026 for small and medium businesses is not a new social network or a Google update. It is that Meta now lets any business put an AI agent on WhatsApp. In the automation work I do for businesses, it is the question I hear most right now: is it worth it, how much does it cost, and is the free version enough?

Here is what I know, with the sources, so you can decide.

What happened: Meta Business Agent

In June 2026 Meta made its AI agent for businesses, Meta Business Agent, available globally after almost two years of testing in countries such as Mexico and India (TechCrunch). It works on WhatsApp, Messenger and Meta ads, and according to Meta it can (WhatsApp Business):

  • Answer basic questions: opening hours, location, how to get there.
  • Give product and service information, including prices.
  • Recommend products.
  • Ask the customer questions to collect information (what they need, budget, city).
  • Handle questions about discounts, payments and shipping.
  • Hand complex or sensitive conversations over to a person.

TechCrunch also reported that Meta is working on calendar management, business discovery and custom agents for larger companies connected to tools like Shopify and Zendesk.

Why it matters so much in Colombia

WhatsApp is not one more channel here; it is the shop counter. According to Infobip’s Messaging Trends Report 2026, business messaging use in Colombia grew 84% in the past year, and WhatsApp led that growth (Infobae).

The problem is almost never demand. It is capacity: the same five questions answered a hundred times a day, leads that arrive at 11 pm, and a team that has to choose between selling and replying. An AI agent attacks exactly that.

What it costs

This is where most of the confusion is, so let us separate two things.

1. Meta Business Agent (Meta’s own agent). Since 1 August 2026, Meta bills its agent’s conversations by token, at USD 2 per million tokens, a single rate that includes the AI processing and the message delivery. Industry estimates put a typical AI reply at around 4 to 5 US cents, and a full conversation from roughly 16 to 50 cents depending on how long it runs. The free test period ran during July 2026 (Wati). At launch, TechCrunch reported that the agent would be part of WhatsApp Business’s premium subscriptions, with token billing for large businesses.

2. A custom agent on the WhatsApp Business Platform (API). Here you pay Meta per delivered template message, by category, plus the AI model you choose. Meta’s official rules (Meta for Developers):

  • Service conversations are free. Replies inside the 24 hour window after the customer writes to you cost nothing.
  • Marketing templates are always charged. Promotions, launches, reminders to buy.
  • Utility and authentication templates are charged only outside the 24 hour window.
  • Click-to-WhatsApp ads open a 72 hour free window. If the customer arrives from one of those ads and you reply, all your messages for 72 hours are free.

That last point is worth knowing if you advertise: sending ad traffic straight to a WhatsApp conversation answered by an agent can be cheaper and faster than a form.

My practical advice: measure before deciding. Count how many conversations you get per month and multiply by the estimated cost. For most small businesses, the monthly bill is lower than one hour of an employee’s time per day.

How to set it up (and what most people get wrong)

Meta describes three steps (WhatsApp Business):

  1. Register: in the WhatsApp Business app, go to Tools, then Meta Business Agent, authenticate and confirm.
  2. Train: let it learn from your past chats, and add your website or catalog.
  3. Test and activate: adjust replies and training data from Tools.

It takes minutes. Making it work well takes longer. What I check with every business:

  • Clean information first. The agent learns from your website, catalog and chats. If your prices are outdated or your website says one thing and Instagram another, the agent will repeat the mistake to every customer, very politely. Update your catalog, prices, hours and policies (payment, delivery, returns) before turning it on.
  • Decide who it answers. Meta lets you choose: everyone, only new customers, or only those who come from ads. A sensible start is new customers and ad traffic; your regular clients already expect a person.
  • Write the handoff rules. Tell it clearly what goes to a human: complaints, refunds, large orders, negotiation, anything medical, legal or financial. A good handoff is worth more than a clever answer.
  • Correct its replies. Meta lets you rewrite responses so it learns your tone. Spend the first two weeks reading conversations every day. Use “usted” if your brand uses “usted”.
  • Tell customers they are talking to an AI. It builds trust, and a customer who knows can ask for a person straight away.

When Meta’s agent is enough, and when it is not

Meta Business Agent is usually enough if: you sell from a catalog with clear prices, most questions repeat, you work from the WhatsApp Business app and you want something running this week.

You need a custom setup (WhatsApp Business Platform plus your own agent) if:

  • Several people answer from the same number, or you have more than one branch.
  • The agent must check real stock, create orders, book appointments in your calendar or record leads in your CRM.
  • You need reports: how many leads came in, how many were qualified, how many bought.
  • You work in a regulated sector or handle sensitive data and need full control over what the agent says and stores.

A practical example: a business that receives leads from Meta ads, qualifies them on WhatsApp, books a visit and then sends a quote. Meta’s agent covers the first part. Connecting it with the calendar, the CRM and the follow up is where a custom setup pays for itself.

The most common mistakes

  • Turning it on without training it and letting it improvise prices.
  • No handoff: customers stuck in a loop with a bot that cannot help them.
  • Sending marketing templates to everyone. They are always charged, and if people block or report you, Meta can limit your number.
  • Not reading the conversations. The chats are the best customer research you will ever have: they tell you which questions your website does not answer.
  • Forgetting the website. The agent answers better when your website is clear and up to date, and the same content helps you appear on Google and in AI search. I wrote about that in AI search and the future of SEO.

How to tell it is working

Before turning it on, note three numbers: average response time, conversations per month and how many end in a sale. After a month, compare. If response time drops to seconds, the team spends less time on repeated questions and sales hold or rise, it is working. If customers keep asking for a person, the training or the handoff rules need work.

An AI agent on WhatsApp is not a trick to stop caring about customers. It is a way to answer everyone, at any hour, so your team can spend its time where a person makes the difference. If you want help setting it up, connecting it to your CRM or deciding between Meta’s agent and a custom one, that is part of my AI agents and automation service.

Frequently asked questions

What is Meta Business Agent?

It is Meta's AI agent for businesses. It answers customer questions on WhatsApp, Messenger and Meta ads, recommends products, gathers information from customers and hands complex or sensitive conversations over to a person. Meta made it available globally in June 2026.

How much does an AI agent on WhatsApp cost?

Since 1 August 2026, Meta bills Business Agent conversations by token, at USD 2 per million tokens, with AI processing and message delivery in the same rate. Industry estimates put a typical AI reply at around 4 to 5 US cents. Custom agents built on the WhatsApp Business Platform also pay Meta's per-message template fees and the cost of the AI model they use.

How do I activate the AI agent in WhatsApp Business?

In the WhatsApp Business app, go to Tools, select Meta Business Agent, authenticate and confirm. Then train it with past chats, your website or your catalog, test it, and set which customers it should answer and which topics it must hand over to you.

Will an AI agent replace my sales team on WhatsApp?

No. It works best answering repetitive questions, qualifying leads and covering nights and weekends. Negotiation, complaints, high value clients and anything sensitive should go to a person, and Meta's own handoff control exists for exactly that.
